This introduction to case reports with handouts provides an overview to case reports and the CARE guidelines. Downloads include the CARE checklist and timeline instructions and examples, as well as case report writing templates in multiple languages. CARE guideline articles were published in the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology in 2013 and 2017.

Our goal is to introduce case reports and the CARE guidelines to support you in writing accurate and transparent case reports for professional presentations and academic publications. Dr. Riley has been involved with health research reporting guideline development for 20 years, co-led the development of the CARE guidelines for case reports, and teaches case report writing in multiple settings. He has been a medical writer and editor since 1995 and is an expert at guiding authors to write case reports in a format suitable for presentation or publication.

David Riley, MD — founder of SWIHM and co-leader of the CARE guidelines — is board certified in Internal Medicine, an editor with The Permanente Journal and has participated in the development of health research reporting guidelines since 1999. SWIHM was founded to improve health research preprints, posters, and publications through training in writing using reporting guidelines to support better communication among healthcare stakeholders around the world.

In 2011, Dr. Riley co-led the development of the CARE guidelines, a widely accepted standard for writing case reports accepted by medical journals and translated into more than 10 languages. Currently living in Portland, Oregon, Dr. Riley's interests range from music to cooking to medicine; he invites you to use case reports to communicate with the global healthcare community.
